Red bush tea; also called rooibos meaning “red bush” in Afrikaans; is made from the branches and twigs of a tree called Aspalathus linearis. It is originally from South Africa, where bushmen have used it as a tonic against both the cold and heat. This fragrant, caffeine-free tea has been popular in Southern Africa for generations where it is the national drink, but it is now consumed in many countries worldwide.

Red bush tea contains no caffeine yet still is refreshing and stimulating. Red bush tea has a lovely rosy colour and can be drunk with milk. It has a similar flavour to black tea, though slightly fruitier. Red bush has also been used as a medicine for HIV infection, for preventing cancer, and for preventing the decline of thinking skills with age.

Because of the unavailability of scientific studies it is recommended that if you are pregnant or breast-feeding that you should avoid Red bush. You should also avoid it if you have a low iron count. Otherwise, it is considered safe when used as a beverage so can be drunk throughout the day with no undue effects.
